Tetrabiblios
by Claudius Ptolemaeus, a Greek in Egypt (circa A.D. 100 - 178)

When I picked up my newest copy from the local new age bookstore, the owner quietly asked, "Jonathan, can you read and understand this book?" "Most of it," "Well," she continued, "I opened it up and flipped through some pages. I couldn't understand a single sentence." This is a bit telling. Without my earlier studies with Robert Zoller, I wouldn't understand Tetrabiblios, either.

Robbins Translation — This edition is a scholarly work from the Harvard University Press. On the left page you find the original Greek (which I can't read) and on the right you find the English (that many people still cannot read). It is an excellent work, but is not translated for a practising Astrologer, but for Ivy League scholars.

Ashmand Translation — This edition is by an Astrologer and is more useful for my personal practise. Though the Robbins translation seems cleaner, the Ashmand translation doesn't confuse matutine and oriental, or vespertine and occidental. Since Ashmand was an Astrologer, this work is written for the practitioner. Get this copy first.

Modern scholars love to research Ptolemy and ignore his Astrology. Modern Astrologers love to point out that Ptolemy was a scientific journalist, much more than an Astrologer.

Ptolemy's magnum opus may have easily been his work on optics, or else his earth centered Astronomy book, Almagest. Still, I offer my gratitude that he wrote a book that carried Astrology through some lean times and dark, modern, centuries.

Ptolemy begins by explaning reasons for studying and explaining Astrology to his friend, Syrus. His work goes on to explain the science behind Astrology, how planets derive their rulerships, and more. He may well not be right, but he relies on the heavens for his observations. The Sun rules Aries as it is long in the sky and giving forth heat that melts the ice and snow and feeds the vegetation, creating fecundity. His logic continues around the zodiac.

He also introduces us to the four major aspects of Astrology: the square, trine, sextile and opposition. Many of the anicents didn't consider the conjunction as an aspect though they did consider its effect.

He gives a lucid and simple explanation of the rulerships of the planets much later in the bookl.

Really, Ptolemy created a classic work that gave us the knowledge of rules for weather prediction, as well as career prediction, that has lasted almost 2000 years. We can still use his rules to determine the life force of a child, or to discover what level in society our clients will rise to.

Claudius Ptolemy is perhaps the most down to earth introduction to classical Astrology you will find. It also has errors that only a good Astrology course, or the most serious study of modern translations, will correct for you. For example, he calculates the Part of Fortune (pars fortuna) one way for day and night births. According to modern research this is only useful for daytime births. The way you calculate the pars fortuna for day and night charts is, well, day and night from each other.

Enjoy Ptolemy, but be sure to follow up with a good course or study of medieval Astrology. That way, the scholar's mistakes won't stick with you too long.
